Russia-USA Competition in Central Asia and the Regional Effects of the Shutdown of the USA’s Manas Military Base in Kirghizstan

Kirghizstan, the only country in the world that owns both an American and a Russian base in its territory, made a decision to shut down the USA owned Manas Military Base. The statement made by the Kirghizstan President Kurmanbek Bakiyev on the evening of February 3, considered as an “unexpected” development, although the shutdown of the American base is expected for a long time. Especially, this announcement came as a surprise for the government and the opposition in the Kirghizstan. Kirghiz authorities, who made a statement at the same hours with Bakiyev, stated
